When Jaime Martín returns to the Gävle Symphony Orchestra, we encounter a programme in which structure, emotion and musical imagination are woven together. The evening opens with Britta Byström’s Fractal Music – a work inspired by patterns found in nature and mathematics. Just like fractals, the music is built on recurring forms that change and evolve, creating a vibrant and ever-shifting sound world. Here, the orchestra explores subtle nuances, rhythmic shifts and a contemporary musical language that both challenges and fascinates.

Next comes one of the most beloved piano concertos of the Romantic repertoire: Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor. With its instantly recognisable themes, powerful contrasts and vivid Nordic colours, the work has earned an enduring place in the concert repertoire. At the piano is Aristo Sham, a pianist who combines technical brilliance with musical sensitivity. In close interplay with the orchestra, he shapes an interpretation that gives space to both virtuosity and lyricism – from the powerful opening notes to the most delicate, poetic passages.

After the interval comes Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 – a work often described as his most personal and concentrated symphony. Power and intimacy come together in music that moves between dramatic intensity and quiet reflection. The symphony is characterised by Brahms’ distinctive balance between structure and emotion, with each motif developed with precision and depth. The famous third movement features one of his most heartfelt melodies, while the finale brings the work to a reflective, almost tranquil close.

Together, these three works create a concert in which different perspectives on form and expression meet: from Byström’s contemporary sound world, through Grieg’s Romantic power, to Brahms’ mature symphonic writing. Under Jaime Martín’s direction, we experience how music from different eras can reflect one another – and how both structure and emotion continue to speak directly to us today.
