Valls Limestone Quarry

A tranquil pool surrounded by dramatic cliffs – hidden in the forest lies a piece of industrial history now reclaimed by nature.

Information

Valls limestone quarry is a place that leaves an impression. Surrounded by forest and steep rock faces, the water-filled quarry stands as a silent witness to over 200 years of limestone mining in the area. Mining began here in the 18th century, providing limestone to local ironworks, and traces of the hard labour that once shaped the landscape can still be seen today.

Beneath the mirror-like surface lies an open pit quarry up to 30 metres deep and about 500 metres long, bordered by moss-covered rock walls. In the early 1900s, machines became part of the operation, but when mining ceased in the 1950s, nature slowly reclaimed the site.

Today, Valls limestone quarry is a peaceful spot for a walk, a quiet break in the forest, or a scenic photo stop – a place where history meets the calm of nature.
