Hemlingby Outdoor Area.
Welcome to a green oasis in Gävle, which turns white in winter! Hemlingby Outdoor Area is Gävle’s largest recreational area, located within a large nature reserve just over three kilometers south of Gävle city center.

Temporary restrictions:
Starting in week 6, 2026, Gästrike Vatten will begin digging to install new water pipes between Älvkarleby and Gävle, which will affect Hemlingby outdoor recreation area. Some tracks and trails are temporarily closed. The work is expected to be completed during 2027, but the schedule may change.
Ski tracks and lighting
Our temporary tracks are also open for cross-country skiing. If you’re heading out in the evening, you’ll need to bring your own lighting, as the floodlights are out of order following Storm Johannes.

- The 2 km trail around Hemlingbyberget is open to walkers and joggers, but will be shortened and rerouted.
Cross-country skiing on temporary trails
All temporary trails are groomed for cross-country skiing if the weather allows. To reach the temporary ski trails, you will need to carry your equipment and walk a short distance.

Hemlingby Outdoor Area offers endless possibilities for an active lifestyle, with a wide range of activities for all ages.
You’ll find Hemlingbybacken with a snow park, jogging and ski trails of varying lengths, a mountain bike trail, barbecue spots, rest cabins, team-building courses, a nature trail, and Hemlingbystugan with its restaurant and café.
For those who enjoy walking, running, or leisurely strolls, there are multiple jogging trails and a nature trail to choose from. These paths wind through diverse natural environments, ranging from dense forests to meadows and open landscapes. In winter, the area also offers ski trails.
If you’re after a more intense workout, the trail center has an outdoor gym equipped for full-body training. There’s also the Hemlingby Loop, a 2-kilometer training circuit with ten workout stations where visitors can use benches and their own body weight for exercise.
For the more adventurous, Hemlingby Outdoor Area has activities to get your adrenaline pumping. In summer, try the MTB skills course, challenge friends on the team-building tracks, or in winter, race down the slopes of Hemlingbybacken with its snow park.
Children can enjoy activities like the enchanted forest, balance challenges, sledding hills, ski trails, and an ice skating rink. There’s also Snärten the Dala horse, which offers wagon rides and helps with tasks like delivering firewood to barbecue spots. You can also meet other animals in the area, such as rabbits, chickens, and sheep.
If you’re in the mood for something tasty, Hemlingbystugan’s restaurant and café has you covered. They serve lunch on weekdays, and at other times you can enjoy coffee, sandwiches, and salads. Hemlingbystugan also offers facilities for training, sauna sessions, meetings, and conferences. Visitors can even borrow a selection of recreational equipment for free.
